	>>> Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained Wednesday, November 09, 2011 This past Saturday I ventured into Michigan to railfan, something I rarely do. I have spent a good bit of time around the city of Monroe in years past, being only a short 35 minute drive from my college. This trip was different, however. It wasn't a half day spent before or after class. Instead it was an all-day all-Michigan railfan trip. For my troubles I saw nine trains and could have seen two more had I timed my driving a little better. I was a little bummed. I knew I wouldn't see more than a dozen but I was really hoping to get that dozen -- and some specific shots, too. When I got home and dumped the camera on the Macbook's hard drive I was pleasantly surprised. While I only shot seven trains I managed to come home with eighteen "keepers" once I sorted through all my photos. That's about what I'd expect from a day in Deshler, although with a lot less driving. Even better, every shot I got was new. I got one new shot from Monroe and a bunch more from other places, Trenton, Romulus, Carleton, Flat Rock, and Diann. And I'm even thinking about going back sooner rather than later to fill in some of the remaining gaps. Now nine trains is about two good hours spent in Fostoria or Berea, Ohio. I'd consider it to be a good day in southeast Michigan (and a phenomenal day anywhere else in the state). But I came home with a set of completely new photos and I learned a little bit more about the operations that are in my backyard. Throughout the day I had to keep reminding myself of title of this post. Sometimes we get so complacent in our routines we forget the pioneering spirit that's so ingrained in railfanning.
